Dangerous Criminals Released Before Their Trials Because of COVID-19

The Richmond Times reported on May 11, 2020 that during a push to accelerate the review of parole-eligible inmates because of COVID, Virginia released dozens of violent offenders, including killers, rapists and kidnappers, blindsiding prosecutors and victims’ families who say they were not properly notified as required by law, a review by the Associated Press has found.

Some prosecutors are outraged about release in their jurisdictions and have criticized the Parole Board for what they say is a lack of transparency and communication. The board is largely exempt from Virginia’s public records law and does not explain its reasoning for granting releases.
